During a campaign stop in Valdosta, Georgia, former President Donald Trump made several false claims about the federal response to Hurricane Helene. He criticized President Joe Biden for allegedly not responding to calls from Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. However, this was quickly debunked, as Kemp confirmed that he had spoken with Biden the previous day and that the president had offered federal support for the state’s recovery.
Trump also falsely suggested that relief efforts were being intentionally delayed in Republican areas, a claim for which there is no evidence. In reality, FEMA and other federal agencies have been actively involved in rescue and recovery efforts across multiple states affected by the storm, regardless of political affiliation. Trump’s visit, which he claimed was not political, followed his pattern of controversial disaster responses during his presidency, such as delays in aid to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.
While on the ground, Trump partnered with Samaritan’s Purse to deliver aid to Georgia, but his claims about the federal government’s supposed neglect were met with widespread skepticism.

Contrary to other right-wing reporting, Trump’s trip to Valdosta didn’t show he cared about South Georgia. It was simply a photo op for him and his campaign. He wasted time and resources by being in the area; time and resources that were desperately needed elsewhere.
