Tifton Ward Three Commissioner Lester Cromwell filed an official grievance against Mayor Julie Smith, citing concerns about a lack of respect and dignity in their interactions. Cromwell did not disclose specifics due to confidentiality concerns but emphasized that his decision was not made lightly. City Attorney Rob Wilmot responded, stating that Cromwell’s allegations did not constitute a violation of the city’s Code of Ethics. The grievance notice coincided with the city’s settlement with former city manager Emily Beemon, where both parties waived legal actions, and Beemon will be paid through March 2025 as if her employment was terminated “without cause.” Mayor Smith called the accusations “unfounded and without merit.”

{PRESS RELEASE}
Lester L Cromer Jr. |[email protected] | 229-848-4795
Dear Residents of Tifton,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to address a matter that weighs
heavily on my heart and impacts the integrity of our city’s leadership. As your
Councilman for District 3, I have always prioritized serving our community with
transparency, respect, and a commitment to open dialogue. However, recent
events have compelled me to address a serious issue within our city’s
governance formally.
Due to the confidential nature of executive sessions, I cannot divulge specific
details. However, I must stress the gravity of the situation by informing you that I
have filed an official grievance against Mayor Julie Smith. This decision was not
made lightly, but it is necessary to uphold the principles of civility and respect that
we, as a city, are committed to.
The interactions that led to this grievance have raised significant concerns about
the tone and decorum within our city’s leadership. We must maintain a respectful
and constructive environment where all voices—especially those representing
the people—are heard and treated with dignity. Unfortunately, I have
experienced moments where this standard has not been met.
Attached is a copy of a token apology text message exchange that followed one
such interaction. I share this with you not to escalate tensions but to provide
transparency regarding my challenges as your representative. You, the residents
of Tifton, deserve to know when the standards of our city’s civility and leadership
are called into question. Your involvement and understanding are crucial in these
matters.
Tifton has proudly been designated a City of Civility, which signifies our collective
commitment to respectful engagement, even in disagreement. We must all strive
to uphold this standard, particularly those in public service positions. I remain
dedicated to serving District 3 and the entire community of Tifton with the highest
standards of respect, integrity, and collaboration.

Your trust means everything to me, and I am committed to working towards a
future where our city’s leadership reflects the values we hold dear. I will continue
to advocate for a city government that listens, respects, and serves every
community member. Our commitment to these values is unwavering, and I will do
everything I can to uphold them.

Thank you for your continued support. Your trust and understanding during these
challenging times are deeply appreciated.
Sincerely,
Lester Cromer, Jr
