Southwell Medical Clinic is providing free credit monitoring services to individuals affected by a recent data breach. The breach, which occurred around August 16, 2022, compromised patient information, including names, dates of birth, and in some cases, social security numbers. Some patients have expressed concerns about the delayed notification of the breach, receiving letters about it nearly a year later. While the clinic believes that no malicious activity occurred with the compromised data, they cannot provide complete assurance. Social media posts indicate that the breach may have affected deceased individuals as well, leaving residents with lingering questions about the destination of the compromised information. Southwell Medical Clinic is taking steps to address the issue and has offered 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring through Experian to affected patients.
I find it rather funny that when this happens to any organization like this, the first thing they think to do is “let’s offer free information security monitoring”! Cybersecurity is a hard business, but it’s seems pretty tone deaf that this is the typical response.
